Eyelevel BQE Presents: Bloodlines

April 10, 2010 marked the opening of Bloodlines, a multimedia collaboration and revisionist queer history project by my friend Andrew Cornell Robinson. Eyelevel BQE Gallery is graciously hosting the show until May 2, 2010. I encourage people to take a trip and peruse the collection of costumes, prints, photographs, and prose.

Collaborators included fashion designer Sigfrido Holguin, photographer Michael Chiabaudo, Tony the tailor, and yours truly DJ Matt Lament with music. I created playlists tailored specifically for the characters Andrew created and mixed them during the opening. More info regarding these characters can be found at the Bloodlines official site.

Bauhaus 1919-1933: NYC MoMA Exhibit

This was the largest exhibition I’ve seen regarding the Bauhaus school of design. The work and philosophy that was developed in the school’s fourteen years became a major influence on contemporary graphic design, architecture, and commercial signage. The exhibit spans the entirety of the school’s existence showing and appreciating the distinct differences in creative direction during the Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe eras.

The Bauhaus exhibit continues at the New York MoMA until January 25th, 2010.
I enjoyed every piece on display and highly recommend visiting.

In the new Lars von Trier film Antichrist a young couple retreats to their cabin in the woods to grieve over the loss of their infant son. Visually and viscerally stunning it’s a great film for the Halloween weekend.

antville.org showcases the top 101 music videos of this decade. My favorite video of them all is Basement Jaxx: Where’s Your Head At. I thought it was the right video to show for Halloween as well. Oooohh spooky! As I browse through these videos I realize how long ago 2000 was!

Masculin Féminin: 15 faits précis

Masculin féminin (1966) was written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard. It’s the story of French youth culture during the 1960′s, The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola. We follow 21 year old Paul (Jean-Pierre Léaud), an idealistic socialist, as he becomes romantically involved with Madeline (Chantal Goya), a pop singer in the film and in real life. Listen to the film’s title track.

Beyond the plot lies a subtext that I found intriguing and strangely relatable. Maybe it’s because I remember putting together the sober realization that everyday life is banal for the most part. Godard captures this spot on. The characters are not easily defined throughout most of the film. They don’t pass judgment like most film characters do which frustrates contemporary audiences because they don’t know what messages they’re being told to watch. They’re just being, doing, thinking.

Our pop culture has been trimmed down to bite sized pieces, ahem, twitter and facebook updates. We look for guidance through these bits of information. I love Masculin Féminin because it doesn’t guide you or tell you who to judge and how to live. It warns of the birth of the coca-cola generation and patiently reveals a tragedy of modern youth.
